TBSI Master and PhD Scholarships for International Students in China

Introduction: The Tsinghua-Berkeley School of Shenzhen (TBSI) is offering Master and PhD scholarships to international students. This scholarship program, established in 2014, is a collaborative effort between the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley), Tsinghua University, and the Shenzhen Municipal Government. It aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration, cultural exchange, and innovation in science and technology.

Requirements: To be eligible for the TBSI Master and PhD Scholarships, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  1. Non-Chinese nationality and good health.
  2. Applying for a full-time international postgraduate program at Tsinghua University (excluding joint training programs) for the current year and being admitted to the university.
  3. For Master’s degree scholarships, candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree, be under 35 years old, and possess a good academic record. For PhD scholarships, candidates must hold a master’s degree, be under 40 years old, and demonstrate academic excellence.
  4. Not having previously received any scholarship from Tsinghua University.
  5. Not having applied for the Chinese government scholarship through other channels, such as Chinese embassies or consulates abroad.

Benefits: The TBSI scholarships provide the following benefits:

  1. Tuition fees: For PhD programs, the annual tuition fee is 40,000 CNY. For Master’s programs, the annual tuition fee is 33,000 CNY.
  2. Application fee: 800 CNY.
  3. Medical insurance: 600 CNY per year.
  4. Accommodation on Tsinghua campus in Shenzhen: Approximately 1,000 CNY per month for single rooms.

Application Process: To apply for the TBSI Master and PhD Scholarships, follow these steps:

  1. Visit the university’s admission website.
  2. Create an account and complete the application form.
  3. Upload the required supporting documents.
  4. Pay the application fee online at the time of submission.
  5. Scholarship consideration is only possible after applying for admission.

The following supporting documents may be required during the online application process:

  1. Curriculum Vitae (CV): Include your undergraduate and, if applicable, master’s GPA.
  2. Personal Statement: All applicants should submit a personal statement. PhD program applicants should also provide a brief introduction to their research experience.
  3. Degree Certificates: Master’s program applicants should submit their bachelor’s degree certificate. PhD program applicants should submit both their master’s and bachelor’s degree certificates.
  4. Academic Transcripts: Master’s program applicants should provide their undergraduate academic transcript. PhD program applicants should provide transcripts for both their undergraduate and master’s degrees.
  5. HSK Certificate and Score Report (if applicable): If you have taken the HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) Chinese language proficiency test, include your certificate and score report.
  6. Recommendation Letters: Two recommendation letters from reputable academics with a minimum title of associate professor.
