Hornby Scholarships

Introduction

Hornby Scholarships, initiated in 1961, are prestigious awards offered by the University of Warwick to experienced English language professionals. These scholarships provide an opportunity for teachers, teacher-trainers, inspectors, and material writers from outside the UK to pursue a one-year Masters in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages).

Requirements

To be eligible for the Hornby Scholarships, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Have a minimum of three years of full-time English language teaching experience and an undergraduate degree.
• The undergraduate degree should be equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in the United Kingdom.
• Possess a minimum of five years of experience as an English language teacher or trainer.
• Be involved in developmental work as a trainer or manager.
• Be a citizen of the country from which they are applying.
• Score well in the IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE examinations, with a minimum GPA of 6.5 in the English language exams.
• Have supervised English language courses.

Note: Candidates who have applied for an English Language course in the United Kingdom for a master’s degree or diploma program are also eligible for financial support.

Application Process

Applicants are required to follow the steps below for the application process:

1. Fill out the online application form with the following details:
   • Personal information: Full name, e-mail address, date of birth, gender, nationality, residential address, and contact information.
   • Academic details: Name of the institution, undergraduate degree and specialization, 10+2 mark sheet, certificates, awards, and information about English medium courses.
   • Professional details: Name of organization, position in the company, type of work, dates of employment, joining date, and resignation letter.
   • Referees: Provide details of at least two referees who can provide references if shortlisted for an interview. Include the referee’s name, professional information, email address, and their professional relation to the candidate.
   • Support statement: Justify in approximately 1,500 words why you are applying for the Hornby Scholarship. Answer questions such as current English teaching duties, training delivered, teacher or trainee status, motivation to study at the University of Warwick, professional skills and experience, anticipated benefits of the scholarship, and plans to share learning and knowledge with English language teachers in your home country after returning from the UK.
2. Submit the completed application form with all the required information.

Selection Process

The Hornby Scholarship selection process consists of the following stages:

1. Online application form: Candidates submit the online application form for initial assessment.
2. Interview: Shortlisted applicants are invited for an interview at the office of the British Council in their country of origin.
3. Application to the University: If selected in the interview, candidates are invited to apply to the University of Warwick for further consideration.
4. University acceptance: Scholarship awards are confirmed for selected candidates, and arrangements are made for them to join the classes in the United Kingdom.
