Global Minds Doctoral Scholarships Programme at KU Leuven

Introduction:

The Global Minds Doctoral Scholarships Programme at KU Leuven offers exceptional students from developing countries the opportunity to pursue a PhD degree at Belgium’s largest university. Managed by the Interfaculty Council for Development Cooperation (IRO), this scholarship program aims to support students in conducting their research in a ‘sandwich’ system, with 50% of the research taking place at KU Leuven and 50% at their home institution, under the guidance of a local co-promoter. The PhD degree is awarded by KU Leuven.

Requirements:

To be eligible for the Global Minds Doctoral Scholarships Programme, applicants must meet the following criteria

  1. Citizenship: The applicant must be a citizen of one of the countries included in the scholarship country list. EU citizens and applicants with a long-term EU residence permit are not eligible.
  2. Educational Background: The candidate’s latest Master’s degree must have been awarded no more than ten years prior to 1 October 2023 (including the ongoing calendar year). The candidate must have achieved an academic grade equivalent to High Distinction or higher. Degrees obtained with a final score equivalent to second class second/lower division will not be considered.
  3. Research Proposal: The research project must demonstrate excellent academic quality with a specific focus on development relevance.
Benefits:

Selected scholars will receive the following benefits as part of the Global Minds Doctoral Scholarships Programme:

  1. Tuition Fee: The scholarship covers the full tuition fee for the PhD program at KU Leuven.
  2. Monthly Allowance: Scholars will receive a monthly allowance to cover living expenses during their studies.
  3. Insurance: Medical and accident insurance will be provided to ensure the well-being of scholars throughout their program.
  4. Travel Costs: The scholarship includes a travel allowance to cover the costs of travel between the home institution and KU Leuven.
  5. Research Allowance: Scholars will receive financial support for their research activities.

Application Deadline: The deadline for the Global Minds Doctoral Scholarships Programme is 9 March 2023 at 5:00 PM GMT. Applications received after this date will not be considered.

Application Process:

The application process consists of two steps:

  1. Admission to a Doctoral or Predoctoral Program: Candidates must first obtain admission to a doctoral or predoctoral program at KU Leuven. It is important to start this application procedure at least 1.5 months before the scholarship deadline.
  2. Scholarship Application: Once admission to the program has been obtained, candidates can apply for the Global Minds PhD scholarship. The application must be submitted before the scholarship deadline.
