CARTA PhD Fellowships for African Researchers

Program Description

The Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA) is a collaborative initiative involving eight African universities, four African research institutes, and select non-African partners. CARTA offers a unique model for doctoral training in sub-Saharan Africa, with the goal of strengthening the research capacity of participating institutions and promoting internationally competitive research. The program welcomes applications from various disciplines, including public health, demography, anthropology, communication, economics, and others, as long as the research question contributes to public and population health issues in Africa.

The following African universities are part of the CARTA program:

  1. Makerere University, Uganda
  2. Moi University, Kenya
  3. Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria
  4. University of Ibadan, Nigeria
  5. University of Malawi, Malawi
  6. University of Nairobi, Kenya
  7. University of Rwanda, Rwanda
  8. University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa

The program also involves the following research institutes:

  1. African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC), Kenya
  2. Agincourt Health and Population Unit, South Africa
  3. Ifakara Health Institute (IHI), Tanzania
  4. KEMRI/Wellcome Trust Research Programme, Kenya

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

To be eligible for the CARTA PhD Fellowships, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Hold a master’s degree in a relevant field.
  2. Admission into a PhD program is not required at the time of application, but applicants must obtain admission at one of the participating African universities to be eligible for the fellowship.
  3. Applicants must be teaching or research staff at one of the participating African institutions and show commitment to building capacity at their respective institutions.
  4. The proposed PhD research topic must be related to public and population health.
  5. Fellowships are open to individuals who have not yet registered for a PhD or are in the early stages (first year) of the program.
  6. Applicants must commit to participating in all four annual residential Joint Advanced Seminars (JASes) and engaging in inter-seminar activities to stay connected with peers and mentors.
  7. Male applicants must be under the age of 40 years, and female applicants must be under the age of 45 years by April 30, 2019.
